“Home for the Holidays”

“Home for the Holidays”

About This Campaign

As the holiday season quickly approaches, there is one thing most of us can agree on…there is no better feeling than being home for the holidays.

But for many low-income families in little slice of New Jersey, the holidays can be a stark reminder of what it means not to have a decent and permanent place to live. It will be hard to lift their spirits during this special season.

Your special holiday gift of $25, $50, $100 or more can give another family in desperate need of a decent place to live the best gift of all…their very own place to call home for the holidays.

Right now, we have the Johnson family who is waiting to finish construction on their Habitat home. It's a special project that we've called "Habitat : Barrier-Free".

But we can’t complete their home - or start building more homes in the new year - without your support.
Our 2017 plans include a 12-home project in Old Bridge – to serve U.S. veterans as well as families still displaced by Hurricane Sandy.

In these urgent times, I hope we can count on you for a special holiday gift to help us BUILD FUTURES by giving families their own place to call "home for the holidays".

Campaign to Support Habitat for Humanity of Greater Plainfield & Middlesex County

Habitat for Humanity helps families build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter.
Our vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

With your special holiday gift, you can give another family in desperate need of a decent place to live the best gift of all… their very own place to call home for the holidays.

A perfect example of our commitment to helping families build strength, stability and independence through housing is the story of the Johnson family…

For the past two years, Nikeisa Johnson struggled to support her family and give her two-year-old son, Bishop, a safe and secure home.  Bishop was born with medical conditions requiring an accessible and barrier-free home; he has been hospitalized since birth and has yet to come home.  Until Nikeisa can demonstrate to the hospital that her home can accommodate his medical and disability needs, Bishop will not live with his mother and his three older sisters.  Nikeisa, a low-income renter in our community, works full-time while caring for her daughters and travels every weekend down to South Jersey to see her hospitalized son.

Nikeisa is a mother who simply needs “a hand-up” to meet the needs of her family. Even though she works hard, she can only afford a small two-bedroom apartment… and certainly cannot afford to modify any home for her son’s medical needs. An accessible and affordable place for her family to live is simply out of reach.

This holiday season, the Johnsons will no longer have to worry about when Bishop can come home. We are excited to share that the Johnsons were accepted to become a Habitat partner family based on their need and willingness to partner in our program.  We specifically designed a home with a wheelchair-accessible bedroom and bathroom on the first floor, with all of the necessary amenities to meet her son’s medical needs.  Construction is currently underway on East Fifth Street in Plainfield!

“When we learned about Habitat for Humanity, everything in our lives changed for the better,” Nikeisa said.  “It has been a real turning point for us. Habitat for Humanity and all of the people who will help build our home has given us the sense of hope we have longed for.  And we finally will have a place we are proud to call home.”

This holiday season, you can give more low-income families like the Johnsons the independence and stability they need to build a better life for themselves and their children.

Like the Johnsons, all Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers. When construction is complete, they pay an affordable mortgage, which is invested back into our program to build more homes for more families in need!
